Its creator, Raphael Bordallo Pinheiro, is one of the most relevant personalities of the 19th century Portuguese culture. He had a special love for cats. He used to say he had been a cat in another life!

His cats were well known in their cartoons and ceramic pieces. Perhaps, because cats are often scratching animals, in an attitude similar to the political satire of their cartoons.
